December, 1998 - As you will see, nobody wrestled any tougher competition than we did:
Ironman Tournament in Ohio
3 wrestlers placed in the Ironman. We were led by Francois McDaniel’s runnerup finish. Ryan Brewer and Stephen Ardman both finished 5th.
Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada
Francois McDaniel obtained All-American status in his close loss in the finals, to #1 ranked Nic Frost from Arizona. Francois "put Parkview on the map" as he won round after round beating All-Americans and multiple state champs from all over the country. Although no other Parkview wrestler placed, this tournament allowed us to see the best wrestlers in the country.Panther Dual Meet Tournament
The Panthers lost in the finals of the 16 team dual tournament, but gained valuable mat time by wrestling 8 duals in 36 hours. Coaches, fans, and parents loved the easy-to-follow format. Teams that participated in this tournament were: AA State Champions Morgan County, AA State runnerup Westminster, AAAA 3rd place Parkview, and the AAAA 4th place finisher Harrison. Although our panthers lost to Harrison in the finals of this tournament, we edged Harrison at the state tournament to finish 3rd.
U.S. Open - Tulsa, Oklahoma
Our panther wrestlers did well at yet another nationally acclaimed tournament. Placing in the middle of the pack in the team competition, the team was led by champion Francois McDaniel as he scored a fall in 0:58 in his finals match against Clint Delesdaier of Walsh Jesuit, New Orleans. Also placing was two-time state champ Ryan Brewer, who injury defaulted for 4th place.
Gwinnett County Dual Tournament
The squad defended their dual meet championship title by posting lopsided victories against neighboring South Gwinnett, Norcross, and Central Gwinnett. Once again, the finals came down to us and our rival Collins Hill. In one of the best duals in the state, the "good guys" prevailed 33 - 24 winning 6 matches by fall.
Gwinnett County TournamentThe Panther wrestlers won their 7th county title in this decade as they outdistanced rival Collins Hill. The team was led by Stephen Ardman, Jon Huff, Ryan Brewer, Francois McDaniel, and Matt Book as all five won individual titles. Finishing second for the squad were Andy McCarthy, Beau Risley, and Jon Boncek. Third place honors went to Chad Wright and Robert Wallace, and fourth place to Omar Rogel.
Area 8AAAA - State Qualifier
The Panthers suffered a let down as they dropped the chance at the Area title with a poor performance on the first day of competition. Although they rallied on the second day, our panthers finished a close second just 5 points behind. One thing was for sure, this poor performance got the Panther wrestlers attention.
State AAAA Tournament
The Panther wrestlers stormed their way into the first round of the state tournament and led most of the first day. After a poor performance in the previous tournament, the squad put forth a great team effort and finished third for the second consecutive year.
Francois McDaniel finished his high school career with his second consecutive state championship. This gave Francois 2 consecutive runnerup finishes and 2 consecutive championship finishes in his four year high school career. .Ryan Brewer suffered a tough loss in the finals, but completed his high school career with 2 state championships, one runnerup, and one third place finish. Ryan will be attending the Unites States Air Force Academy in Colorado. We wish Francois and Ryan the best of luck in their future endeavors. They have helped continue the Parkview tradition of excellence! Also placing in the state tournament were 4 juniors:
Stephen Ardman - a transfer student who had never before placed at the state tournament, Stephen lost a thrilling match at the buzzer in the finals for the 125 lb. division championship to the defending state champion. We look forward to great things from Stephen during his senior year.Jon Huff - just a third year wrestler, Jon finished in third place in the 130 lb. division. After a tough loss in the quarterfinals, Jon battled back to dominate the wrestlebacks.
After taking 3rd at their state qualifiers, juniors
Beau Risley (160 lb) and Robert Wallace (189 lb) both finished 6th at the state tournament. Both wrestlers won close matches in the wrestlebacks to get to the placement rounds, but then lost close matches to drop to 6th place. Nevertheless, these two athletes are anxiously looking forward to their senior year of competition. One match from placing was junior Jon Boncek (171 lb) and sophomore Matt Book (215 lb).
Jon Boncek was voted captain by his peers and is the new team leader due to his hard work and dedication. He won the state qualifier and landed in a tough spot in the bracket. We should see him placing in this tournament next year.Matt Book, a second year sophomore, continued his impressive wrestling season by narrowly missing a place in the 215 lb. division. Although he only weighs 185 lbs., he demonstrated throughout the season the bigger the heart - the better the wrestler. We’re looking for great things in the future from this super sophomore.
For the first time in school history we placed 6 wrestlers out of 11 qualifiers at the state tournament. Our previous high was 4 wrestlers when our Panthers wrestled to a runnerup team honors in 1990.
